Technical and price action analysis are two very popular trading studies that both involve the use of charting to comprehend

<h3>Always ask questions</h3>
A chart can help us to assess the probability of a move higher, lower, or range-bound in the markets. Markets are a series of mostly random events, so as traders our job is to manage risk and assess probability and that's where charting can genuinely help.
When you're starting out using technical, price action analysis or a mixture of both, the first thing you should do is ask yourself a few questions about what the markets are trying to tell you:
<ul><li>What's the chart pattern saying about the behaviour of active market participants at that moment?</li><li>If a market is trending higher or lower, what's the probability of a continuation of that trend?</li><li>A market may have travelled from A to B, but how can we assess the overall quality of the journey?</li></ul>
While <a href="/education/fundamental-analysis">fundamental analysis</a> is interested in the ‘why’, technical and price action analysis is interested in the ‘what’.
<h4>What does a chart represent? </h4>
This is a simple question but the answer is complex. Whether we're looking at a line chart, a bar chart, Renko or a candlestick chart, all charts are a different portrayal of supply and demand.
A chart aggregates every buy and sell transaction on that market or instrument at any given moment. It factors all known news, as well as what traders expect from future news events, earnings and cash flows before we see the subsequent reaction should the reality be different.
Charts blend all activity from the millions of market participants, human or otherwise. Whether the transaction occurred by the actions of an exporter, an algorithm, a central bank or from a retail trader, a chart blends all this information together to output data traders can assess, analysis and dissect. When you understand and confidently interpret what this information is telling you, it can be incredibly powerful.

Technical analysis looks at the rhythm, flow and trends in market behaviour. To understand these behaviours traders can look at a diverse range of tools to do this, such as analysing classic charting patterns such as a head and shoulder reversal pattern, trading breakouts, or using support and resistance. Technical analysis isn’t so much about prediction as it is about probability because in reality, the markets are a series of random events.<img data-image="7csv19rvbwh0" src="https://eu-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltaec35894448c7261/bltfa6805d7d782df89/5e7bcaa2456135521344838c/tg-chart-tech-analysis-1.png" data-sys-asset-uid="bltfa6805d7d782df89" alt="tg-chart-tech-analysis-1.png">However, it’s not all about patterns, indicators and support and resistance. There are studies such as the Gann or Elliott Wave that we can use also effectively use. This discipline is an art in itself, and if used correctly, can be highly profitable.
Technical analysis can be an excellent tool for helping to analyse volatility and risk. It's an essential tool for assessing how much risk you’re prepared to take on, as well as correct position sizing and any levels where you may expect stronger demand or supply to come in that may cause a reversal in price.

Rather than assessing pattern recognition or applying indicators, such as a Relative Strength Indicator (RSI), which are derived from moves in price and have a natural lag, price action is about getting to the bare bones of trading. By studying the movement in price over a set period, you get all the information you need to trade trends, breakouts, scalp and swings effectively.
Candlestick charting is perhaps the most commonly used from of price action analysis, so make sure to find out more about <a href="/education/candlestick-charts">how to use candles</a> to understand price action.
Price reacts to all known news, and therefore, moves in price tell you what the collective weight of money thinks of breaking news rather than one individual.
Remember, price is never wrong. If you're losing money, you're wrong. As traders our job is to manage this risk and close the trade. Not everyone is speculating and reacting to the news. Every day, billions of dollars are transacted through markets by entities that aren't speculating. Perhaps it’s a pension fund rebalancing its portfolios at the end of the month, a central bank managing its currency exposures or a retailer in Australia buying TVs from Japan in JPY. Either way, price action looks at all global capital flows at any one time and tells you not just how a market reacted to a US Nonfarm payrolls, but the entire holistic picture in more detail than we could hope for.

Price action analysis

One of the most powerful reversal signals is when we actually combine both technical analysis and price together. As we can from the daily chart of AUDUSD using MT5, price has moved down in a bearish channel and made a series of lower lows and highs. However, as you can see with the blue arrows stochastic momentum made a higher low, which demonstrated exhaustion in the trend, and a reversal played out over the next few weeks.<img data-image="2ebw9kedtxj5" src="https://eu-images.contentstack.com/v3/assets/bltaec35894448c7261/bltfe3984aca9bbd9ca/5e7bcaea5b96ae5b57698953/tg-chart-tech-analysis-2.png" data-sys-asset-uid="bltfe3984aca9bbd9ca" alt="tg-chart-tech-analysis-2.png">We can use a range of oscillators, such the MACD or RSI, but this divergence is one of the most powerful reversal signals in the market and one you should master.

Divergence

If you can code and write the objectives of the EA then even better, but the good news is you don’t need any prior knowledge in writing scripts, as there are thousands of prewritten EAs you can simply download and chose to use as and when you see fit. Each EA is set to perform a specific objective, and therefore the performance will vary between each.
EAs are not just set to execute market orders. They could also be programs such as an interesting indicator or system that show correlations in markets.
